Festival of Fruit 2026
Year of Eugenia & Her Sisters
Festival of Fruit 2026 highlights Eugenia & Her Sisters, celebrating diverse, beautiful, climate-adaptable fruiting plants.
Eugenia is a genus of flowering plants in the myrtle family Myrtaceae. It is known throughout the globe, with the majority of the more than 1,100 species found in tropical and subtropical areas of the New World, especially the Andes, the Caribbean and Atlantic coastal forests. Many species of the Old World have been reclassified into the genus Syzygium, (what we’re calling her “sisters”). Eugenia species are woody evergreen trees and shrubs, some of which produce edible fruits that are eaten fresh or processed into jams and jellies. Others with attractive glossy foliage are especially valued as landscape or topiary plants.
Some well known cultivars include Surinam Cherry, Cherry of the Rio Grande, Cedar Bay Cherry, Grumichama, Araza, Pitanga, Pitomba and Pitangatuba. These varieties of the Eugenia genus thrive in a range of climates — making them a perfect focus for growers eager to expand their collections.
The genus Eugenia is named in honor of Prince Eugene of Savoy.
